The Hong Kong prize is a non-profit organization that awards academic merits to students in the area of history. Each year, the prize is given to a graduating BA student who has excelled in courses related to the study of Chinese history from 1840 until the present day, including the history of Hong Kong and Macau.
The winner receives a cash prize of HK$5,000, which can be used for further studies or to purchase books. Each winning student will also be given a commemorative plaque. The award is open to all students who meet the eligibility criteria of having a high grade point average and a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all courses completed during their undergraduate degree. The selection committee consists of members from the Hong Kong Historical Society and is chaired by the Executive Director of the Society, Dr. Raymond Chan.
If there are no winners for the First and Second Prizes, these prizes will be rolled over to a Jackpot (Duo Bao Jiang) to be distributed in the next draw, similar to the case of the Hong Kong Film Awards 2024 where Sean Lau Ching-wan and Michelle Wai Sze-nga won best actor and actress prizes for their performances in Mad Fate and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In respectively. The Jackpot amount will be calculated as 9% of the total Prize Fund minus the First Division Prize (excluding the minimum first prize).
In the Xplorer Programme, promising young scientists with outstanding academic achievements and research proposals are awarded up to HK$100 million to enable them to explore new areas in their research and to bring their work to the world. Applicants are assessed on their independence, exploration, creativity and innovation in their research.
The Xplorer Programme is the highest prize awarded by the Hong Kong prize, and was established in 2018 by Pony MA, Chairman of Tencent and founder of the Xplorer Foundation, alongside renowned scientists. Applicants are required to submit a full article and a blinded abstract of no more than 500 words via the link or QR code below.
